Photographing naked ladies

Colchicum autumnale or Autumn crocus is popularly known as the naked lady. It seems that this is because of its appearance – a flower with no surrounding leaves.

The leaves and seeds appear in the Spring but then seem to die off in the summer leaving a very exposed flower with a very white stem.

They make a very welcome sheet of colour. The plants themselves do not fare well when the wind blows though.

Nevertheless they are delightful but of course sadly poisonous – so it’s not a plant for families with young children.
