Curiouser and Curiouser
Welcome to Wonderland.
Who would have thought in the middle of the city of Norwich one would find a South Asian Decorative Arts and Crafts Collection Trust and a Gallery, Country and Eastern Ltd, which sells colourful rugs, traditional furniture, paintings, hand made goods, jewellery and ceramics from India and the Far East? Pause for breath.
All of this is housed in a restored Victorian roller-skating rink just beyond the main market area of the city. The interior roof of the building is worth going to see on its own.
I am always a bit sceptical about fashionable galleries, knowing full well that I am not going to be able to afford even the smallest items I might fancy – you know the sort of place I mean, those emporiums that sell rusty disused British Railways fire bucket for £250 each. Country and Eastern isn’t like that. I found their goods tasteful and offered at reasonable prices. They also have small items postcards and pictures for sale.
But it’s not just a gallery the museum part works with UEA and Norwich University of the Arts and collects items of South Asian arts and crafts and is embarking on research work.
Go and see! It is really worth a visit and a browse. Take your camera Philip and Jeanie Millward don’t mind you taking the occasional shot for personal use. Tell your friends because they may want to go Christmas shopping there for a gift that is just that bit different.
You can always have a quick peep for yourself here Country and Eastern.
